The Future of Food

"We used to be a nation of farmers, but now it's less than two percent of the population in the United States. So a lot of us don't know a lot about what it takes to grow food."
- Judith Redmond, Full Belly Farms

"This stylish film is not just for food faddists and nutritionists. It is a look at something we might not want to see: Monsanto, Roundup and Roundup-resistant seeds, collectively wreaking havoc on American farmers and our agricultural neighbors around the world. In the end, this documentary is a eloquent call to action."
--
The Telluride Daily Planet

There is a revolution happening in the farm fields and on the dinner tables of America -- a revolution that is transforming the very nature of the food we eat.

THE FUTURE OF FOOD offers an in-depth investigation into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically engineered foods that have quietly filled U.S. grocery store shelves for the past decade.

From the prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada to the fields of Oaxaca, Mexico, this film gives a voice to farmers whose lives and livelihoods have been negatively impacted by this new technology. The health implications, government policies and push towards globalization are all part of the reason why many people are alarmed by the introduction of genetically altered crops into our food supply.

Shot on location in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, THE FUTURE OF FOOD examines the complex web of market and political forces that are changing what we eat as huge multinational corporations seek to control the world's food system. The film also explores alternatives to large-scale industrial agriculture, placing organic and sustainable agriculture as real solutions to the farm crisis today.

Nutritional Support for Anemia

Anemia, literally meaning "without blood," is one of the most common nutritional diseases on the planet. There are several major types of anemia, and all of them result in abnormally low levels of iron in the blood. Consequences of anemia, which can range from mild to severe, may produce fatigue, heart trouble, and mental cloudiness, among other symptoms. Anemia also reduces the amount of oxygen available to cells and organs, a significant factor in many disease processes.

Types of Anemia
  • Iron deficiency anemia: This is the most common form of anemia, and may be caused by a poor diet, or due to other conditions such as internal bleeding.
  • Pernicious anemia: This type is the result of the digestive tract's failure to absorb sufficient amounts of iron or other important nutrients such as vitamin B-12.
  • Anemia due to vitamin deficiencies: The body cannot make enough red blood cells (rich in iron) without key nutrients such as B-12 or folic acid.
  • Anemia linked to chronic illness: Certain conditions can interfere with the production of red blood cells, producing ongoing anemia. These include HIV, kidney disease, arthritis, and Chron's disease. Certain types of cancer, especially blood or bone marrow cancers, can also interfere with normal blood cell production. Some autoimmune diseases can also cause the body to unnaturally destroy red blood cells.

When a person is anemic (has low iron levels) it is usually because the body is not producing enough red blood cells (RBCs). Without enough RBCs, insufficient amounts of oxygen becomes a problem, and waste products such as carbon dioxide cannot be efficiently eliminated. A protein in RBCs called hemoglobin enables the distribution of oxygen, and anemia is also often the result of low levels of hemoglobin.

Symptoms of Anemia

Fatigue is the most common symptom associated with anemia. Others may include:

  • Pale skin
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Cold extremities
  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion or memory loss
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Headaches
  • Bleeding gums or a sore, red tongue
  • PICA: Abnormal craving to chew on ice, chalk or crayon
  • Prone to illness
  • Shortness of breath upon the least bit of exertion

If you suspect you are anemic, blood tests are available that can measure your levels of iron, hemoglobin, and nutrients associated with prevention of anemia such as B-12 and folic acid.

Nutritional Interventions

Except for anemia caused by other conditions, the vast majority of cases can be prevented or turned around through proper nutrition or nutritional supplementation. The use of a natural iron supplement can be appropriate, but keep in mind that too much iron can be toxic to the body. If you do take an iron supplement, be sure to choose one that is in a form similar to that naturally found in the body, as many synthetic forms of iron cannot be absorbed or utilized properly.

Two major nutrients are typically lacking in anemic persons: Vitamin B-12 and folic acid. Both of these can be elevated via a healthy diet or with natural supplementation if necessary. A diet that is high in iron is very beneficial too. Foods that are iron-rich include beans, lentils, dried fruits, and many nuts.

The ability to absorb B-12 declines drastically with age. A sublingual B-12 bypasses the digestive system, providing an infusion of B vitamins directly into the bloodstream. A formula that includes Vitamin B-6 and Folic Acid which work synergistically with Vitamin B-12 in lowering serum homocysteine levels and nutritionally supporting a healthy nervous system and cardiovascular function is recommended. High homocysteine levels are an independent risk factor for heart attack, stroke, or vascular disease. Elevations in homocysteine are found in approximately 20 to 40 percent of patients with heart disease. When there is too much homocysteine in the blood, arteries are damaged and plaque forms. The result is arteriosclerosis and heart disease. This happens when we don't get enough of certain vitamins, mainly B-6, B-12 and folic acid. These B vitamins are missing from our diets because processing and refining foods destroys these vital nutrients.

I highly recommend the methylcobalamin form of vitamin B-12 which is active in the central nervous system. The liver does not convert the cyanocobalamin form of vitamin B-12 into adequate amounts of methylcobalamin. The solution is to take vitamin B-12 in the methylcobalamin form under the tongue every day.

Vitamin B-12 can be found in red meat (or fish such as salmon and mackerel if you wish to avoid red meat), leafy green vegetables, and in dairy foods such as milk, egg yolks, and cheese. If you have pernicious anemia, it is also important to use a spore-bearing probiotic to strengthen the health of your digestive tract. B-12 is necessary for health RBCs to form and reproduce.

Folic acid, another of the B vitamins, works in close conjunction with B-12, and anemics are often low in both. Risk factors for low folic acid levels (and low B-12) include pregnancy, cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, the use of certain medications, and alcohol abuse. Foods rich in folic acid include citrus fruits and leafy green vegetables.

It is also important to get enough vitamin C, as this substance helps your body to absorb more iron, B-12, and folic acid.

Let me suggest a superfood that is wonderful for treating and preventing anemia: organic, non-sulphured blackstrap molasses. This byproduct of refined sugar has a rich, bittersweet flavor, and is rich in numerous nutritional goodies including iron, calcium, copper, manganese, magnesium, selenium, and vitamin B-6. In fact, blackstrap molasses is higher in iron than red meat, and lower in calories and fat-free to boot!

Bitter Melon for Diabetes

Bitter melon is one of those natural foods and herbal remedies that are really fun to learn about. Bitter melon is very useful for many health applications. It is used in some cultures as a food source, and researchers have only begun to fully understand how and why it is so beneficial. All of these factors make bitter melon a wonderful gift from our Creator. Its positive effects on treating and preventing diabetes is probably the most well-known benefit of bitter melon, but, as with most natural substances, new uses are cropping up all the time as we begin to understand better the ins and outs of the interplay between its various components.

The bitter melon plant (momordica charantia) has a long history of use in Eastern cultures, and its virtues have become more popular worldwide in recent decades. Also known as bitter gourd or balsam pear, this vegetable was originally native to Asia and today grows wild or is cultivated in tropical regions around the globe. It is similar in appearance to a cucumber with a bumpy skin, has a bitter taste as the name indicates, and most of its medicinal value is concentrated in the extract of the unripe fruit, interestingly enough. In a Chinese medical book from the 16th century, bitter melon is described as "bitter in taste, non-toxic, expelling evil heat, relieving fatigue, and illuminating." Supplemental forms of bitter melon capitalize on its qualities that have been known in traditional medicine for many years.

Bitter Melon and Diabetes

Diabetes is growing at epidemic rates throughout the West and around the world, with 50 million cases currently worldwide, and that number projected to reach 300 million by 2025. Big Pharma has jumped on this crisis and developed drugs that help manage insulin and regulate blood sugar. However, the catch is that they have potentially hazardous side effects including buildup of fluids, weight gain, and heart failure.

The exciting thing about bitter melon is that it functions to counteract diabetes in similar ways to these drugs, but without any known side effects. Researchers have identified at least four distinct components of bitter melon that stimulate an enzyme called AMPK, which is a protein that plays a key role in the progressing of fuel in the body, especially glucose. The action of bitter melon on AMPK is just like that of physical exercise on the body. For diabetics, or to prevent diabetes, taking a bitter melon supplement along with exercising is a powerful one-two punch.

Bitter melon is effective on both type 1 (insulin dependant) and type 2 (maturity onset) diabetes. Certain compounds in bitter melon help lower and maintain proper levels of blood sugar in the body. Of particular benefit to type 2 diabetes, bitter melon also reduces a phenomenon known as insulin resistance by which diabetics cannot properly absorb and use insulin. Even beyond that, scientists studying the effects of bitter melon have discovered that it can actually increase the number of cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, thereby helping the body to naturally help itself.

Not only do components of the Bitter Melon plant act to lower blood sugar levels in diabetes, but they also have beneficial effects on conditions associated with this disease. These include prevention of the development of diabetes-related cataracts, a result that has been demonstrated in preliminary studies thus far in humans and mice. Reductions in diabetes-related nerve damage (neuropathy) and also stomach conditions (gastropathy) have been demonstrated in experimental rats fed Bitter Melon as well.(1)

Bitter melon is an excellent example of a natural substance that has numerous bioactive components that work together synergistically to produce health benefits that could not occur if the ingredients were isolated. (This is why consuming organic fruits and vegetables, especially if raw, is better for us than just drinking the juice, for example.) To date, about 32 different components of bitter melon have been identified that have various bioactive properties. Some are unique to bitter melon, but others that you probably recognize include lycopene, vitamins B and C, beta-carotene, potassium, calcium, and iron.

Other Uses for Bitter Melon

Bitter melon has been used over the centuries for many health applications. It has proven itself beneficial as a preventative measure and a treatment for digestive disorders, respiratory ailments such as bronchitis and asthma, and diarrhea, to name a few.

Weight loss. In India, Bitter Melon has traditionally been used as a weight-loss aid. A number of studies Bitter Melon fruit and/or seeds have been shown to reduce blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, both in the presence and absence of dietary fats. University of Hong King researchers have demonstrated that Bitter Melon reduces adiposity (the ability to store fat or create adipose tissue) in rats fed a high-fat diet. The Bitter Melon powder used in this study did not work by blocking fat absorption within the gastrointestinal tract; rather it appeared to regulate fat metabolism within the rat's tissues.

Cancer. A phytochemical isolated from Bitter Melon has clinically demonstrated the ability to inhibit an enzyme, guanylate cyclase, that is thought to be linked to the pathogenesis of cancer. MAP30, a Bitter Melon derivative, also inhibits prostate tumor growth.

Herpes/AIDS. Bitter melon is also a versatile anti-viral substance, with experiments studying its effectiveness on the herpes-1 virus being very promising. One of the most exciting areas of research regarding bitter melon has been about using it to fight HIV/AIDS. The protein MAP 30 inhibits new growth of the HIV virus in white blood cells, and slows down the duplication of the virus in infected cells as well. Perhaps the potential of bitter melon as a wellness tool is far greater than we even know at this point in time.

Bitter Melon Contraindications(2)

If taken in capsules, power or liquid form, I highly suggest being monitored by a qualified healthcare practitioner. Bitter Melon may have additive effects when taken with other drugs whose action is to lower blood glucose levels. Bitter Melon should never be taken in combination with these therapies, especially in addition to insulin.

Since the fruit and seed of Bitter Melon have proven to be effective in lowering blood cholesterol levels in animal studies, those taking medication to lower blood cholesterol should avoid using Bitter Melon.

Bitter Melon has been used to promote uterine contractions so its use should be avoided during pregnancy. Nursing mothers should also avoid using Bitter Melon both as a food and as an herbal remedy.

Avoid Bitter Melon if one has a known allergy or an allergy to any member of the Curcurbitaceae plant families.

Mandatory Vaccinations -- How To Minimize Harmful Effects

The onslaught of media coverage about swine flu has decreased somewhat in recent months, but stories still pop up regarding its effects around the world and fears of health officials that it will become a "killer epidemic." All this despite the facts indicating that swine flue is, in reality, the result of manufactured hysteria designed to justify mass vaccinations. The evidence for labeling swine flue as a public health menace simply isn't there. Consider the fact that influenza deaths in the U.S. average 30,000 annually, while only 117 fatalities worldwide have been "officially" linked to H1N1 (swine flu). It is obvious that there is an agenda behind all this hype. One of the biggest fears is that legislation will be passed making vaccinations for swine flu and other "diseases" mandatory.

In a fascinating article in last month's Baltimore Chronicle, author Stephen Lendman(a) educates us as to why the powers-that-be are pushing for mandatory vaccinations, some of the unsavory history of vaccine hazards, and why allowing these substances to enter our bodies is a very bad health choice.

Much has been written about the conspiracy between groups such as the World Health Organization (WHO), National Institutes of Health (NIH), the FDA, and pharmaceutical firms regarding vaccinations. Some in this network are seeking power and political control through manipulation, and see mass vaccines as a way to further accomplish their goals. The other major factor is money. Let's face it: There is an enormous amount of it at stake, and Big Pharma stands to reap windfall profits if vaccines become mandatory.

In his article, Lendman discusses another very ominous aspect of the vaccine debate. One of the reasons given for the use of certain vaccinations is protection from chemical, viral, or bacterial warfare. Usage of experimental vaccines on members of the U.S. Military has been justified because of this reasoning, despite the known (and unknown) dangers of these untested drugs (Gulf War Syndrome is an excellent example). However, due to the components of some vaccines, particularly a substance called squalene which is found in almost all of the newer generation vaccinations, the administration of these chemicals could itself be a form of bioterrorism. When injected directly into the body squalene has been linked to debilitating autoimmune diseases that cause the body to turn on itself in the form of arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, and other conditions. Could it be that one of the purposes of pushing these unnecessary and harmful vaccine programs is to keep the financially huge "sick care industry" alive and well?

Will Vaccines Soon Be Mandatory?

There are some things going on that might indicate this is the plan. Certain measures have been passed and others are in the works that may very well be setting us up for mandatory vaccinations. Several states are now forcing children to be vaccinated with increasingly large numbers of chemicals before enrolling in school or day care. The Military is also ramping up for more shots, many of which are experimental, with little or no data to support their safety or effectiveness. Laws have been passed that allow the FDA to expedite approval of vaccines without adequate testing in the face of a "medical emergency," a term that is very poorly defined. (The manufacturers are also protected from potential liability, interestingly enough.) The next step is to convince the public that "preventative" vaccines are needed to protect us all from scary diseases (many of which do not really exist!) They would rather intimidate the American people with fear and let them choose to line-up to be vaccinated, but making it mandatory is a reality that may possibly occur, with those who resist being branded as unpatriotic troublemakers that must be brought under control for the good of us all.

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." - Benjamin Franklin

Protection From Vaccines

If it comes down to submitting to forced vaccinations, there are steps you can take to support your health despite exposure to these toxins. The most important thing to remember is to keep your immune system (digestive tract) as strong as possible by pursuing a lifestyle that includes an organic diet heavy on a variety of fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, plenty of pure water, sunshine, stress reduction and adequate exercise and sleep.

1) Homeopathic intervention is also recommended. Homeopathy is a concept of "like cures like" that introduces a minute amount of a disease-causing substance with the result being development of immunity to the illness by the body. One particular type of homeopathic remedy is called a nosode, and has been used extensively in veterinary applications as an alternative to traditional vaccines like rabies and others that are toxic to the animals. Studies have also indicated success at protecting humans both from illnesses and from the hazards of traditional vaccines. Homeopathy is a very useful tool that can be used to combat the effects of vaccinations if it gets to the point in this country that our health freedoms are so battered that we lost the legal right to refuse vaccines. Do your research and decide if this is something to have on-hand for your family.

2) Performing a heavy metal cleanse after any type of vaccination can help the body to rid itself of harmful chemicals and metals that are in many vaccines. Even children can perform a heavy metal cleanse safely and effectively.

3) Zeolite is an excellent choice for removing heavy metals and toxins. I prefer to use Zeolite that has been naturally "bound" and absorbed directly into the molecular structure of fulvic acid, making it easily and completely accepted or bio-available to the human body.

4) Chlorella stimulates the activity of T-cells and macrophages by increasing interferon levels, thus enhancing the immune system's ability to combat foreign invaders whether bacteria, viruses, chemicals or foreign proteins. Chlorella is a powerful detoxification aid for heavy metals and pesticides.

5) While performing cleanses and detoxifying from heavy metals and chemical toxins, it is imperative to keep your liver supported and your digestive tract clean. I recommend an organic whole-herb, alcohol-free tincture called LivaPure for liver support and detoxification. For digestive tract cleansing, Pure Vegan Mag O7 is an oxygen-based entire digestive tract cleanser that I recommend and use personally. Be sure to use a good spore-bearing probiotic during and after any type of cleanse.

Most importantly, do not allow FEAR or unfounded scenarios control your thoughts. Decisions that are made under fear are usually regretted later. Put together a plan for your family and include products in your natural medicine cabinet that will address heavy metal and chemical cleansing, liver support and digestive tract cleansing. Being prepared is ALWAYS a wise choice!

Gingivitis and Your Health

Gingivitis, also known as gum disease, periodontal disease, or bleeding gums, is a common health issue, with an estimated 80% of American adults likely to experience it to some degree or another in their lifetime. The vast majority of gingivitis can be treated and prevented through good oral hygiene and a nutritious diet. However, in some cases, gingivitis can indicate or cause greater health concerns, and potentially lead to serious systemic infections that can become critical health issues.

Gingivitis, literally meaning "inflammation of the gingiva," is caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the mouth that attack the gingiva, which is the gum tissue located at the base of the teeth, and can spread to other periodontal tissues such as the entire gums, bone, and additional soft tissues that surround the teeth. Food residues combine with bacteria to form a substance called plaque that harden and turn into a more permanent form called calculus or tartar. The inflammation that results can cause gums to deteriorate and bleed. The good news is that with proper mouth care, plaque will not form. When poor dental hygiene is practiced, the concern can increase to more extreme cases of gingivitis that can produce bone and tooth loss and potential spread of the infection throughout the body. In some cases, this can be fatal if certain organs of the body are attacked.

The best way to avoid gingivitis is to effectively brush your teeth after every meal followed by a natural mouth spray such as Breath Fresh(TM). If you can't realistically brush throughout the day, at least rinse your mouth with water and then apply Breath Fresh(TM). Eating a health diet while avoiding sugar and simple carbohydrates is recommended, as these foods attract harmful bacteria to your mouth, and quickly form into plaque. Three times weekly perform a mouth and gum cleanse using an oral irrigator.

Use an natural fluoride-free tooth paste or make up a batch of my Natural Tooth Powder recipe. Always follow by a good rinse with Breath Fresh(TM). An effective remedy for gingivitis is to place two drops of Oregasil(TM) Oregano Oil in warm, filtered water and then swish in the mouth for 10-15 seconds two times daily. If you practice this consistently, your teeth and gums will love you for it, and you will prevent or help heal the issues that lead to gingivitis.

Symptoms of Gingivitis

If you notice any blood in the sink or on your tooth brush after brushing or flossing, take notice. If this continues after improving your oral care, you may have a problem with gingivitis.

Other signs can include swollen, tender gums that are a darker red in color rather than the normal pink. Unusually bad breath is also typical when the gums are infected.

More severe cases can produce decay of the bone and soft tissues surrounding the gums, and loose teeth that can be a consequence of that. If gingivitis has advanced this far, there is a good chance of dangerous systemic infections.

What Else Can Gingivitis Point To?

If you continue to suffer from bleeding gums even after practicing good oral health, your body may be leaving clues to other possible causes for the gingivitis.
  • Nutritional deficiencies: Certain nutrients can prevent bleeding gums, particularly vitamins B and C. These are needed to keep oral tissues healthy, and vitamin C is a particularly potent antioxidant that will help prevent infections in the gums.
  • Weakened immune system: Gingivitis can indicate that your immune system is not as strong as it should be. Normally, if you take good care of your teeth and gums, the immune system will naturally deal with the harmful bacteria that triggers gingivitis. However, if your body is fighting illness such as cancer, diabetes, or other chronic conditions such arthritis or fibromyalgia, for example, your immune system may be over-worked and unable to prevent gum disease.
  • Medication side-effects: Some drugs can reduce the amount of saliva secreted in the mouth. Saliva naturally acts as an anti-bacterial agent, so it is easier for gingivitis to occur if saliva levels are lowered. Medications to watch out for include antihistamine, cold remedies, some blood pressure meds and immunosuppressive drugs, often given in conjunction with organ transplants. Gingivitis risk is also increased for people who are undergoing chemotherapy, as this is very hard on the immune system. Leukemia patients often suffer from bleeding gums both from the illness itself and treatments they are receiving.
  • Hormonal changes: When hormonal balances vary, as is often the case during menopause, puberty, and pregnancy, gingivitis may more easily develop. Hormones play so many key roles, and controlling the types and amounts of bacteria in the mouth is one of them.

Health Benefits of Melatonin

Melatonin research has increased significantly in the last 25 years or so, and it is exciting to see the increasing amounts of evidence pointing towards numerous health benefits associated with this hormone. Long known for its ability to regulate sleep and other bodily cycles, melatonin has also been identified as a powerful antioxidant and immune system booster that can help prevent and treat a variety of diseases.

What Is Melatonin?

Melatonin is a hormone secreted by a gland located in the brain of all mammals called the pineal gland. This gland is light-sensitive, and its production of melatonin is regulated by the daily cycles of light and darkness. Melatonin is necessary for proper regulation of the body's circadian rhythm, the natural 24-hour cycle that determines sleep/awake patterns, metabolism rates, and other daily functions.

Melatonin causes you to naturally get sleepy at night and wake up in the morning as daylight arrives. Melatonin output peaks in the middle of the night, and blood levels drop to their lowest at daybreak and when we awaken.

Melatonin production drops significantly as we age. The pineal gland starts putting out melatonin around the age of 3 months, and increases steadily until the age of 2 or 3, when it begins to drop its nightly production. Blood levels in senior citizens is much lower than in younger people, likely accounting for the higher incidence of sleep disorders in older people. Fortunately, supplemental forms of melatonin are available to counteract these natural drops.

Benefits of Melatonin
  • Sleep regulation: As mentioned, melatonin regulates sleep patterns. It is often used to treat jet lag, for people who sleep during the day, and for seniors and others that have trouble sleeping. More current research points to additional benefits of melatonin: It seems to not only induce sleep, but also boosts the effectiveness of what is known as "restorative sleep." One of the reasons plenty of quality sleep is so important is that this is the time when our body repairs and restores its own cells, tissues, and organs, with both healing and the elimination of wastes occurring during each sleep cycle.
Because of the fact that melatonin production is triggered by darkness, it is a legitimate health concern for night workers who sleep during the day. They need supplemental melatonin to sleep and to prevent potential disease caused by insufficient levels of melatonin (more on that in a moment).
  • Antioxidant: Antioxidants are the worst enemies of free-radicals, substances that break down the body and increase our risk for disease. Research indicates that melatonin has powerful antioxidant qualities -- perhaps even more potent than known antioxidants such as vitamin C, beta-carotene, and vitamin E. Some studies have produced evidence that melatonin may help to protect genetic material in the body from damage, thus reducing risk for cancer, stroke, and other debilitating conditions. Studies have linked low levels of melatonin to breast, prostate, liver, and other cancers. Melatonin is also involved in the regulation of many of the female hormones.
Melatonin is also structured so that it has the ability to pass through the membrane of literally all cells of the body, including the brain (because it can cross the blood-brain barrier).
  • Cognitive and mood-altering benefits: Melatonin can help stabilize moods, fight depression, and help with other neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Studies have shown it to be particularly beneficial for combating "sundowning" in Alzheimer's patients, a phenomenon characterized by increased confusion and agitation occurring in the evening. Research has also linked Parkinson's disease to reduced melatonin secretion.
  • Immune system: Melatonin may also help strengthen the immune system, by bolstering the production of natural killer cells, and because of its antioxidant properties. It can also reduce the effects of aging, and in one study actually extended the life span of rats by 25%. The implications for this in humans is as of yet unproven but nonetheless very interesting.
Melatonin has also been used successfully to combat the hazardous side effects of chemotherapy, a situation that seriously impacts the health of the immune system
  • Migraine headaches: Melatonin has also been used to prevent and treat migraine headaches, with many patients reporting up to a 50% reduction in the number of migraines after taking melatonin supplements. This may be because of its anti-inflammatory effect.

Eliminating Constipation From Your Life

Constipation is a very common problem for many Americans, and it seems to only be getting worse as our national health continues to deteriorate from a poor diet, lethargic lifestyle, and other bad habits. Unfortunately, constipation is more than just a nuisance or inconvenience. When waste is not regularly and efficiently eliminated from the bowel, it exposes our bodies to toxins and can lead to serious conditions such as colon cancer and other potentially life-threatening diseases. The good news is that regularity is a by-product of a lifestyle of wellness, and constipation can, in most cases, be totally eliminated through digestive tract cleansing, healthy eating, proper hydration, and by getting plenty of exercise -- things we should be doing anyway.

How do I Know if I Have a Constipation Concern?

Everyone should experience at least two-three bowel movements daily. Some researchers estimate that 4-5 million Americans are diagnosed with constipation annually, but this figure is likely very low. Why? Simply because mainstream physicians just don't get the importance of 2-3 bowel
movements daily, and in fact, consider such a goal to be ridiculous. I have heard of some doctors telling patients that moving their bowels once a week is normal and ok for them! No wonder colon cancer and bowel disease is on the rise.
The truth of the matter is that we were designed to quickly process the food we eat and eliminate the waste products promptly. In more primitive cultures -- especially when their diet is primarily raw grains, fruits, and vegetables instead of processed and refined foods -- it is common for people to eliminate about 20 minutes after every meal, an event that happens several times daily.

If you are not having bowel movements often enough, are suffering from hard stools and having to strain to move your bowels, or experiencing foul-smelling stools, I would be very concerned about the health of your bowel and you would definitely qualify as having a constipation concern.

Major Causes of Constipation

There are a lot of causes of constipation, and the damages caused by constipation can sometime be very hard to repair. A permanently damaged bowel is called Hirschsprung's disease -- which means the nerves going to the bowel have been permanently damaged or destroyed. It is a very common disease affecting millions of people, however conventional doctors do not seem to diagnose it.

The health of the bowel is a very good indicator of the condition of the entire body, and most cases of constipation are simply the result of poor lifestyle choices. Some of the best steps one can take to eliminate constipation include:

  • Eat healthy: Eliminate junk food, high-fat/low-fiber foods, sugar, and processed foods. Fiber is absolutely necessary for good bowel health, and a diet high in raw foods, whole grains, and a variety of organic fruits and vegetables will be your colon's best friend. You will not be constipated, and your bowel will be able to absorb a maximum amount of nutrients from the quality fuel you provide for your body.
  • Stay hydrated: Many cases of constipation are solely due to dehydration. Be sure to drink 6-8 glasses of filtered water daily, and eliminate caffeinated beverages such as coffee and soft drinks.
  • Exercise: Regular physical activity provides numerous healthful benefits, and preventing constipation is one of them. Exercise improves muscle tone and performance in the intestinal tract, allowing for more effective elimination of waste.
  • Don't "put off" the urge: One key to regularity is to promptly move your bowels rather than postponing it until later. Allowing fecal matter to stay in your gut any longer than necessary only contributes to bowel compaction and constipation, and it enables toxins to enter the body and produce disease.
  • Colon Cleansing: Regular use of an oxygen-based colon cleansing product will help promote regularity and do wonders for the overall health of your digestive tract. It will help to clear and prevent the accumulation of waste, an issue that can cause constipation and lead to more serious bowel disorders.
  • Use a spore-bearing probiotic: Much of the action in the digestive tract, both absorption of nutrients and elimination waste, is made possible by the presence of beneficial bacteria. One cause of constipation and other bowel concerns is a lack of such flora, often due to the overuse of antibiotic drugs. Supplementation with a quality probiotic is a powerful way to keep your bowel healthy.
  • Eliminating stress: Stress is very destructive to both mind and body, and constipation can be caused by stress. Learning how to deal with the stresses of modern life is a huge step towards wellness. Suggestions for combating stress include prayer, relaxation techniques, exercise, and plenty of quality sleep, to name a few.

Healthy Benefits of Vitamin B-12

Vitamin B-12 is one of the core nutritional necessities that our bodies need to function properly and keep us well. B-12 is vital for many processes in the body including the health of the nervous system, emotional and cognitive wellness, cardiovascular health, a strong immune system, and others.

Why Supplementation With B-12 Is So Important
B-12, like many substances found in nature, is available in a wide variety of foods. However, when we eat a diet high in cooked, refined and processed foods, much of the B-12 is compromised or destroyed, resulting in a sabotage of B-12 that is usable by our bodies. In addition, B-12 is not most effective when it is found in an isolated form. There is a synergistic effect that takes place only when B-12 is in the presence of other nutrients such as B-6, folic acid, and calcium, to name a few. Therefore, to get enough B-12 only from foods is a challenge that calls for a well-rounded diet high in a variety of organic, whole foods.

Examples include:

  • Organic cheese, milk, yogurt, and other dairy products
  • Sea vegetables (such as kelp) (be careful of toxins)
  • Organic eggs
  • Cold water fish
  • Organic, free-range meats (especially liver)
  • Brewer's yeast

Some studies have resulted in estimates that up to 40% of Americans may not have adequate levels of B-12 in their bodies, especially the elderly. The lack of available B-12 in foods is a major reason why the use of supplemental B-12 is essential. In addition, certain other risk factors make it even more likely that deficiency of B-12 exists, including:

  • Age: The older we get, the harder it is for us to get enough B-12
  • Smoking reduces the body's ability to absorb B-12.
  • Vegetarians can also be at increased risk because meats are one of the greatest sources of dietary B-12.
  • Anyone with digestive issues such as gastric bypass surgery or other stomach surgeries are not able to assimilate enough B-12 (and literally all other nutrients as well).

Benefits of Vitamin B-12

B-12 plays many important roles in nutrition and prevention of disease. Some of these include:

  • Nervous system health: B-12 can treat and prevent mood disorders, improve memory and mental clarity, help with depression and other mental conditions, and bolster the overall health of nerve cells and transmissions. B-12 has been shown to improve metabolism in every cell of the body, especially nerve cells. This is why B-12 is good for treating fatigue and boosting energy levels.
  • Immune System: Lack of B-12 suppresses the immune system. Getting plenty of B-12 is a great way to keep your natural immune system functioning in tip-top shape, thus preventing all types of disease and illness.
  • Cardiovascular: B-12 helps lower blood levels of an amino acid called homocysteine, which is a risk factor for arterio sclerosis, heart attacks, strokes, and other vascular conditions.
  • Circulatory: B-12 is necessary for the body to create enough red blood cells. A condition known as pernicious anemia occurs when the body is unable to do this. B-12 also improves your blood’s ability to carry more oxygen.
  • Genetics: B-12 is also crucial for the synthesis of DNA and RNA in all of the body's cells. It also helps with optimal growth and development in infants and children.
  • Allergies: Try more B-12 for fighting food allergies, asthma, and other allergic reactions. B-12 can also help with conditions such as bursitis and eczema.
  • Absorption of nutrients: B-12 helps us get more nutrients out of the food we eat. Helpful for people with digestive disorders that decrease assimilation of nutrients such as Chron's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and others.

Methylcobalamin: The Better Supplement Choice

Methylcobalamin is one of the two coenzyme forms of vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin). Evidence indicates methylcobalamin has some metabolic and therapeutic applications not shared by the other forms of vitamin B12. Methylcobalamin is the active form of vitamin B12 that acts as a co-factor for methionine synthase in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine, thus lowering blood levels of homocysteine. Methylcobalamin acts as a methyl donor and participates in the synthesis of SAM-e (S-adenosylmethionine), a nutrient that has powerful mood elevating properties. Vitamin B12 can be absorbed sublingually, orally, and in a doctor's office it can be given by injection.

Oral supplements of vitamin B12 as well as injections are able to correct vitamin B12 deficiencies. However, oral doses must contain more than 200 times the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin B12. Dr. Lisette C. P. G. M. de Groot, study author, of Wageningen University in the Netherlands indicated that most people develop vitamin B12 deficiencies as a result of "malabsorption," in which the body becomes unable to extract vitamin B12 from food. According to de Groot, the deficiency typically strikes older people and takes years to develop. In some instances, people who avoid animal products -- such as vegans and followers of a macrobiotic diet -- can also develop a deficiency in vitamin B12 as a result of not eating enough B12-rich foods. A vitamin B12 deficiency is typically treated by monthly shots that are usually painful. To investigate whether an oral dose of vitamin B12 works, as well, various daily doses of oral vitamin B12 supplements were tested in 120 people aged 70 and older. It was found that daily oral doses of 647 to 1032 micrograms of vitamin B12 appeared to correct the deficiency. The current RDA for vitamin B12 is 3 micrograms per day. SOURCE: Archives of Internal Medicine, May 23, 2005.

Mothers with low levels of vitamin B12 in their blood are at increased risk of having a baby with spina bifida -- a birth defect in which the spinal cord fails to form properly. Based on previous research, pregnancy guidelines do recommend that women consume enough folic acid to reduce the risk of spina bifida and related health concerns. The new findings indicate that these guidelines should also include recommendations about vitamin B12.

B-12 works best in a comprehensive formula that includes all of the B-complex vitamins. They have a greater effect together than individually. Avoid B-12 supplements that have artificial ingredients and fillers. These may be cheaper, but think value not just cost alone. Unfortunately, studies have shown that due to poor regulation and ambiguous marketing, consumers may have only a 20% chance of purchasing supplements that actually contain what is listed on the label! A liquid B-12 Methylcobalamin will most likely prove to be the best source as far as absorption and utilization.

Interactions with Drugs and Herbs

Vitamin B-12 can interact with the following: Alcohol; Aminosalicylic acid (para-aminosalicylic acid, PAS, Paser); antibiotics; hormonal contraception; Chloramphenicol (Chloromycetin); Cobalt irradiation; Colchicine; Colestipol (Colestid); Cholestyramine (Questran); H2-receptor antagonists include cimetidine (Tagamet), famotidine (Pepcid), nizatidine (Axid), and ranitidine (Zantac); Metformin (Glucophage); Neomycin; Nicotine; Nitrous oxide; Phenytoin (Dilantin); phenobarbital; primidone (Mysoline); Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs); Zidovudine (AZT, Combivir, Retrovir); Folic acid (large doses); Potassium.

Health Benefits of Black Seed Oil

Black seed oil, also known as Nigella sativa or Black Cumin or Black Caraway Seed, is one of the latest examples of a natural substance that has been used in folk medicine for thousands of years, and is only recently gaining acceptance in alternative and even some mainstream medical circles in the Western world. Once you gain a bit of this potent healing herb and nutritional powerhouse, it is hard not to scratch your head and wonder why it took so long to become "popular." (Of course, the resistance against proven natural remedies is enormous in our culture, but that's a topic for another post.)

The use of black seed oil to treat and prevent dozens of conditions goes back at least 2000 years. Many ancient writers have referenced black seed oil as a legendary herbal remedy that has renowned protective and healing powers. In fact, that Islamic prophet Mohammed reportedly stated: "Black seed oil heals every disease except for death." (The FDA would have had a conniption fit over this!) In Egypt the oil pressed from black seed was named "Pharaoh's Oil." For this society Black Seed Oil was used most often as a digestive aid. The Bible contains the first written record of Black Seed when Isaiah records that ketsah (Hebrew word for what was later shown to be Nigella sativa) must be reaped by a different technique than that used with wheat (Isaiah 28:25-27).

In more modern times, researchers have discovered that black seed oil truly is a very unique substance -- some calling it a superfood -- that contains over one hundred different nutrients and that act synergistically to bolster overall wellness and battle a host of common medical conditions -- it is made up of about 21% protein and contains significant amounts of essential fatty acids; minerals such as iron, zinc, and selenium; and vitamins A, B, and C.

Here are some of the major benefits that scientists studying black seed oil have identified:

  • Perhaps the most diverse and potent effect of black seed oil is its ability to strengthen the immune system. White blood cells thrive on black seed oil, and there is no greater preventer of disease of all types than an immune system that is working effectively. Black seed oil's positive effects on digestion also empower the immune system.
  • Black Seed Oil produces prostaglandin E1. This particular prostaglandin (the scientific community has identified only twelve) works by regulating hormone secretion. It inhibits inflammation, helps to prevent thrombosis, reduces cholesterol synthesis and works to black the formation of abnormal cells. It also lowers bold pressure and may protect the liver from the effects of alcohol and other irritating drugs. This substance also contributes to Black Seed's general balancing action by maintaining the salt and water balance, and it regulates insulin secretion, nerve conduction and gastrointestinal function.(1)
  • Black Seed Oil (BSO) has a very impressive impact on the health and nutrition of cells throughout the body as well. It contains various substances that have been clinically linked to better cell function by maintaining healthy and effective cell membranes. When our bodies are working well on a cellular level, nutrients are better absorbed, wastes more efficiently eliminated, and basically the body is freed up to heal and repair itself the way it was designed to. Black seed oil is particularly beneficial to brain and nervous system cells.
  • Black Seed Oil is also an excellent body cleanser. It helps keep the digestive tract healthy, and it also has anti-parasitic qualities that help rid the body of unwanted organisms that can cause disease and rob us of nutrients.
  • Black Seed Oil is a good source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PFAs), a type of fat that researchers are discovering more and more exciting benefits for. PFAs perform many tasks including regulating metabolism, drawing toxins to the skin for excretion from the body, improving liver and circulatory functions, and regulating insulin and cholesterol levels.
  • Black Seed Oil has a reputation as a very effective remedy for respiratory conditions such as coughs, colds, and asthma and other allergies. This is likely due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic actions.
  • Black Seed Oil also contains a variety of antioxidants that battle free radical damage. Free radicals contribute to many debilitating diseases including cancer, heart disease, arthritis, and neurological disorders.

Black Seed and Cancer Research

What is most exciting to me is research about Black Seed Oil and its effect on cancer. The Cancer Immune-Biology Laboratory of South Carolina recently published results of one of the most all-inclusive studies on Black Seed. "Black Cumin Oil (Black Seed) generally helps encourage the production of bone marrow and the cells of the immune system...It enhances the productions of interferon, protects normal cells from the damaging effects of viral disease, destroys tumor cells, and boosts the number of antibody-producing B-cells. All registered effects make Black Cumin Oil a perfect candidate for use in cancer prevention and cure." Also, this study specifically noted that the growth rate of healthy bone marrow cells increased by a 250% while the growth rate of tumors decreased by 50%. Black Seed is also known as a BRM (biological response modifier). This means that it will reduce negative side effects of the severe treatments for cancer while also boosting the efficacy of those treatments.(1) Among Black Seed's mechanisms of action are analgesic; vermicide; anti-bacterial; anti-inflammatory; anti-microbial; antioxidant; anti-pyretic; anti-spasmodic; anti-tumor; carminative; diaphoretic; diuretic; digestive; emmenagogue (stimulates menstrual flow); galactagogue (stimulates lactation); hypotensive; immunomodulator; and laxative.(1)

Suggested Ways to Use Black Seed Oil

Here are some possible applications for BSO:

  • Apply topically for skin conditions such as athlete's foot, eczema, psoriasis, or ringworm.
  • Rub Black Seed Oil on the chest for respiratory infections.
  • A teaspoon of Black Seed Oil in a cup of herbal tea can also help relieve cough and cold symptoms.
  • A teaspoon in a glass of juice or in yogurt is a great way to boost energy in the morning and will help you sleep well at night too.
  • Black Seed Oil is great for skin and hair health as well. Add a bit to your soap and shampoo. (Internal use is good for hair and skin too).

Healthy Home or Toxic Home? -- Go Green!

With all the emphasis on the quality of our outdoor air, land, and water over the past few decades, it seems that the safety of the environment inside our homes -- where we typically spend a majority of our time -- was somewhat overlooked. Many studies have proven that the quality of the air in our homes is, in general, much worse than average outdoor air. Scientists have labeled this phenomenon "sick building syndrome," and it is largely the result of two major factors. First, most modern homes are overflowing with toxic chemicals from construction materials, cleaning supplies, and the like. Secondly, with the emphasis on energy conservation, homes are now much more air-tight than in the past, and this lack of ventilation only compounds the problems.

Common Toxins That May Be In Or Around Your Home

  • First, you need to be aware that indoor air pollution is a serious problem. Since World War II, over 80,000 new chemicals have been invented and used here in America, many of which are ingredients in multiple consumer products that have found their way into our homes. Are these substances safe? Some have shown themselves to be very dangerous, but the truth is that only about 5% have ever been tested as in regard to their effects on human health.
  • Under the kitchen and bathroom sinks lurk some of the worst chemical offenders, substances such as bleach, ammonia, and other common cleaners. These create indoor air that is toxic to breath, especially to infants and children, and can irritate and burn the skin, eyes, and other organs. In industry, these chemicals are restricted under the Federal Hazardous Substance act, but they are often silently included in products designed for the home. Mixing bleach and ammonia can produce a deadly form of "mustard gas," an accident that has occurred numerous times with tragic results.
  • Construction materials are also a major contributor to poor indoor environments. This is true in both older homes that have been remodeled, and for new construction. Some items to watch out for are carpeting, processed wood products such as plywood or paneling, paints and stains, chemical-laden adhesives, and insulation products (especially foam). Many of these contain known carcinogens such as formaldehyde or benzene. Often these chemicals found in combination can even worsen the problem.
  • Remodeling can also expose residents to dust containing lead from old paint, mold spores and other toxins that are stirred up and dispersed in the process. Be sure to wear an appropriate mask if doing the work yourself, and protect the rest of your home from contamination by sealing off the area.
  • Some types of granite countertops are often overlooked as sources of toxins. They may emit radiation including radon gas, a major source of lung cancers.
  • Furniture, including bedding, can also pose significant risks. We spend about a third of our lives in bed, and unfortunately many mattresses are laden with toxic fire-resistant chemicals called PBDEs that have been banned in Europe due to their links to cancer and immune system dysfunction. This can also be true for bed covers and pillows. Other furniture made of pressed wood can be a source of formaldehyde and other chemicals.
  • House dust is also a villain. One of its major components are tiny creatures called dust mites (and their dung) that can cause respiratory infections and allergic reactions.
  • Water from municipal systems typically contains either fluoride or chlorine, both of which are dangerous toxins, especially in a gaseous state (like from a shower head).
  • Lawn and garden applications are some of the worst sources of pollution. Many commercial products contain ingredients that are known carcinogens and neurotoxins. In fact, some insecticides and pesticides are chemical relatives of lethal substances such as Sarin (used in the 1995 Tokyo Subway attack) and Agent Orange, a defoliant used in the Vietnam War.

Preventative Steps to Take

  • First, rid your home of all dangerous cleaning supplies. Good old soap and water covers most jobs safely, and vinegar is also an excellent natural cleaner. There are several places on the Internet that give recipes for basic non-toxic household cleaning supplies using very inexpensive ingredients.
  • Be very choosy about construction materials used in your home. If you are doing the job yourself or using a contractor, look into "green" products that are available. Choose bedding and furniture that is not toxic. Natural wood furniture is safer and of higher quality.
  • Clean your house with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a Hepa filter.
  • Carpeting / Flooring -- Don't wait until you are environmentally ill before you consider non toxic carpets. When replacing carpets or buying new carpets look for pure wool carpeting. When entering a home with wool carpets that are untreated and natural, one will not get a headache or burning eyes from the toxic combination of chemicals used to make a regular carpet. When looking for hardwood floors consider non-toxic wood such as bamboo. If one cannot remove toxic carpeting, SafeChoice Carpet Care and SafeChoice Carpet Seal are unique sealers designed to prevent the out-gassing of harmful chemicals used in carpet backing. These chemicals include such known carcinogens as formaldehyde, toluene, benzene, xylene and styrene. Carpet Seal is odor-free and, when properly applied, effectively blocks out-gassing for up to five cleanings or one year.
  • Paint with non-VOC paints.
  • Air out your home at least once per week. Open all windows in the early morning for several hours.
  • Purchase a high quality water purification system for the water in your home, both for drinking and bathing. We use the Wellness Filters in our home and also in the OAW office.
  • Use only "green," organic products in your garden and on your lawn.
  • Keep lots of house plants in your home. They help to cleanse the air in your home and increase oxygen levels as well.
  • Use ionic air purification systems in your home and office.
  • EMF Protection -- Electromagnetic radiation is often overlooked when considering toxins that may be in our homes. I highly suggest purchasing a Safe Space I EMF protector which protects 1,500 sq, feet. The Safe Space II covers up to a 9' radius which makes it perfect for home offices or rooms that have computers or TVs.

The Importance of Getting and Keeping Copies of All Your Lab Work

When taking a proactive stance towards your own health and wellness, one of the best habits you can develop is good record-keeping especially when it comes to the lab work done on you and your family. I highly recommend asking your doctor (at each visit) to write on your chart that you are to get a copy of all lab work. Sometimes doctors' offices will give patients a "run-around" about getting copies of lab work. However, it is your right to have a copy of all lab work and a friendly reminder to office people will usually make sure that your request is fulfilled. Remember that persistence pays off. Keep all copies in an organized file for each member of the family, along with any notes about comments from your healthcare provider.

There are many reasons why this is a good idea including:
  • Having the information at your fingertips regarding what tests were taken and when.
  • Being certain of the results -- having the hard numbers in front of you. This is invaluable when analyzing your provider's interpretation of results and their recommendations based on the results.
  • Also necessary when doing your own research -- something highly recommended -- about what the results mean and how you should proceed.
  • Such records also make it easy for you to track your health and any treatments or preventative measures you may have taken by changes in subsequent test results.
  • It's also a great way to monitor the knowledge of your practitioner: do his or her recommendations match up with your own research regarding appropriate steps based on test results?
  • Lab tests can be an excellent tool for understanding and diagnosing illness when symptoms arise, but perhaps even more importantly, they often can catch potential problems before they begin to exhibit symptoms, allowing for earlier intervention and preventative strategies.
  • Certain core lab tests should be performed on a regular basis to monitor your overall health. Such knowledge allows you to take responsibility for your own wellness. Find a healthcare provider that encourages your participation and welcomes your own questions and suggestions about possible options. Knowing your lab results and how to interpret them is very much to your benefit when it comes to making healthcare decisions.
  • Clearly understanding test results can also help you to spot lab mistakes, which unfortunately happens all too often. If a reading is way out of range or inconsistent when other results, you can question it and request to be re-tested. This can save you from unnecessary or potentially dangerous treatments.

Recommended Lab Work

There are literally hundreds of lab tests that can be taken, and many are prescribed based on specific symptoms or health histories. However, there are several that are excellent indicators of your general health and are very useful for preventative medicine as well (the best kind!). Here are a few I suggest getting regularly and monitoring for any changes:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC): This test measures the number of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets that you have, as well as the relative balance between them. It gives a good reading on the condition of your circulatory system which is so vital for distributing oxygen and other nutrients and eliminating wastes.
  • Liver Panel: The liver is one of your most crucial and hard-working organs -- the main filter of the body. The liver panel, also known as the Liver (hepatic) Function Test (LFT), is useful for gauging how the liver is functioning and is an early predictor of liver disease.
  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel: This test measures blood sugar, electrolytes, and the levels of various minerals, proteins, gases, and other substances in the blood. Measures kidney and liver functions.
  • Lipid Panel: Analyzes the amounts and types of blood fats including HDL and LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. Useful for preventing cardiovascular disease.
  • Iron Profile: Tells the total amount of iron in the blood, in the entire body, and if iron is properly bonding with proteins. Used to analyze anemia, and is particularly useful for young children and pregnant women. Make sure that Ferritin levels are also included.
  • Thyroid Panel: The thyroid gland plays many important roles in your overall wellness. See my blog Balancing The Thyroid Naturally for more information on recommended tests.
  • PSA (for men): Prostate-Specific Antigen testing indicator of prostate health. While there are continual raised-eyebrows about the accuracy of this test, it may be an indicator of possible disease.
  • Vitamin-D Levels: Also called 25-hydroxyvitmain D test or 25(OH)D. Click here (Vitamin D) for more info.
  • Fibrinogen: Gives info about how well your body is able to clot and can help prevent risk for coronary disease.
  • Homocysteine: Tests for an important marker of potential heart disease, and measures vitamin B-12 and folate levels. Can be a blood and/or urine test.
  • C-Reactive Protein (CRP): Excellent test for detecting the presence of inflammation in the body, an indicator of many disease processes.
  • Urinalysis: Very basic, and gives a wide array of information about your overall health.
  • Hormone Saliva Testing (men and women): Gives a comprehensive view of the balance of key hormones in the body. Click on this link for more information: Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone, DHEA Cortisol (morning & evening)

Keep in mind that a number of the above tests can be done through via blood spot or saliva testing in the privacy of your own home.

Candida Cleansing -- Needed By Most

Candida: What is it and why do I need to cleanse it? These are both important questions, that I am frequently asked, that have huge implications for our health. In short, candida albicans is a very opportunistic yeast that, when out of control, can spread quickly throughout the body, release numerous toxins, and wreak havoc with literally every organ and system of the body. The typical American diet and lifestyle encourages the growth of Candida, and unfortunately most mainstream doctors are ignorant as to Candida, its widespread effects, and how to treat it.

Candida occurs naturally in the body, and when it is kept at proper levels, it serves a useful purpose. It is estimated that each of us has about a pound of bacteria living in our bodies, and most of these species are very beneficial and necessary. Many bodily functions, such as proper digestion of our food, cannot occur without helpful bacteria being present. The problem is that when the bacterial balance is out of whack in the body, "good bacteria" tend to get overrun by opportunistic species, and candida albicans is one of the worst offenders.

There are two main reasons why candida infections are at epidemic levels today. The first is a diet that is high in sugar and refined, processed foods. Candida thrives on sugar and foods such as simple carbohydrates, and unfortunately these are staples in the Standard American Diet (SAD). When candida gets a steady supply of such "fuel," it grows and multiplies rapidly.

Secondly, the overuse of antibiotics is also a major factor in candida infections. These types of drugs show no discrepancy when it comes to the kinds of bacteria they attack. So, they often kill off helpful bacteria, allowing harmful species such as candida to proliferate.

What Are the Symptoms of Candida?

One of the things that makes candida a complex health issue is that symptoms often vary greatly from person to person and as candida migrates throughout the body, it shows itself in different ways. Therefore, it is very challenging to diagnose and treat.

Some of its favorite places to attack are the intestinal tract, genitals, and oral cavity. However, it can be quickly dispersed throughout the body and lead to widespread systemic infections.

Some of the most common candida symptoms include:
  • Headaches
  • Skin rashes (eczema, acne)
  • Itching
  • Genital infections (vaginitis, jock itch)
  • Athlete's foot
  • Indigestion
  • Acid reflux
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Sore throat
  • Sinus infections
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle weakness

When candida attacks the brain and nervous system, many cognitive symptoms can occur such as:

  • Brain fog
  • Poor concentration
  • Anxiety
  • Mood swings
  • Hyperactivity
  • Irritability
  • Depression

Candida/yeast infections tend to be very hard on the immune system, 80% of which is found in the intestinal tract. Therefore, the health of the entire body suffers.

How is Candida Best Treated and Prevented?

The most powerful way to fight candida is by taking good care of your intestinal tract. This area is typically the "headquarters" of the candida invasion, and eliminating excess candida from the gut is essential. Several ways to do this include:
  • Diet: Eating raw, whole foods that are free of toxins, such as organic fruits and vegetables. Organic fruits and vegetables also have a high oxygen content. Stay away from junky high-sugar and prepared foods and the SAD, in general. Add lots of garlic and onions to your diet.
  • Water: Drink plenty of pure, filtered water -- this will strengthen your intestinal tract and help to flush out wastes too.
  • Probiotic: The use of a quality probiotic is critical. It will help to restore bacterial balance in the gut, thus giving candida less opportunity to multiply.
  • Digestive Tract Flushing: A thorough flushing of the digestive tract will also help greatly. Researchers have found that candida releases about 70 different toxins into the body, usually starting in the digestive tract. The digestive tract must be flushed out so that it can begin to operate efficiently. This will combat candida and allow digestion to improve, restoring nutrients that candida has highjacked.
  • Parasite Cleanse: Candida and parasites go together. They have a symbiotic relationship, feeding off each other and being very destructive to the body. The use of a quality parasite cleansing supplement will weaken Candida and improve overall health greatly.
  • Wild Mediterranean Organic Oregano Oil: This acts as a potent anti-bacterial that will attack candida and help to cleanse and purify your body, while it also boosts your immune system, which will ultimately counteract Candida. Make sure the oil you use contains at least 80% Carvacrol.
  • Colloidal silver: Using an effective colloidal silver is imperative. Many forms of bacteria, virus and fungus utilize a specific enzyme for their metabolism. ACS 200 Advanced Cellular Silver effectively disables the enzyme that is necessary for these organisms to stay alive. ACS 200 is lethal to all species tested of fungi, bacteria, protozoa and virus. In addition, colloidal silver has the ability to distinguish between aerobic ("good") bacteria and anaerobic ("bad") bacteria such as candida, and will not harm the good bowel flora. Because of the indirect way it works (on enzymes needed by bacteria), Candida also cannot develop a resistance against ACS 200 Advanced Cellular Silver.

Tell the FDA to BACK OFF and Get Real -- FDA Attacks Cheerios!

It appears the FDA is rattling their sabre once again when it comes to regulating the health claims of food products. This is nothing new for them, but this latest development is a red flag for all of us -- consumers, organic food growers, and companies that produce and market nutritional supplements. An article posted at gives a very interesting perspective on this issue from the legal standpoint, and it also offers some clues as to what FDA may really be up to behind the scenes.

The FDA sent a letter in May of this year to General Mills, manufacturer of Cheerios breakfast cereal, informing them that they have mislabeled the Cheerios product and are in violation of FDA regulations. Specifically, the FDA is charging General Mills with making erroneous claims on a website that is printed on the cereal box. The contested claims include statements that eating Cheerios can lower cholesterol, with clinical studies to prove it.

The FDA is upset for a couple of main reasons. First, they are accusing General Mills of leading consumers to believe that Cheerios is -- are you ready for this -- a drug, specifically an "unapproved" drug. What this says between the lines is that even a natural substance, such as whole-grains, is considered a drug by FDA standards and subject to regulation if any health benefits are linked to it.

The FDA has also stated that two claims in particular are at issue:

  • "Heart-healthy diets rich in whole-grain foods can reduce the risk of heart disease."
  • "Including whole grains as part of a healthy diet may reduce the risk of certain types of cancers. Regular consumption of whole-grains as part of a low-fat diet reduces the risk for some cancers, especially cancers of the stomach and colon."

The FDA is claiming that the above statements are too confusing for the American public to comprehend, that people cannot properly understand the context of the terms "healthy diet" or "low-fat diet."

From a legal standpoint, the attorneys who wrote this article are saying that these statements appeared to be in line with FDA regulatory standards, thus making the ruling ambiguous and open to a challenge.

From a practical perspective, these statements are simply facts about the known health benefits of eating whole grains, without any reference or claim to Cheerios or any other product. Not to mention that the FDA vastly underestimates the capability of people to understand and apply these facts to their own lives by their own free will. The really ludicrous thing is that if the FDA was truly concerned about our health they would be issuing statements such as those above themselves! How many meds have they approved and then had to recall because the drugs killed or maimed people?

The thing that we really need to pay attention to, according to these lawyers whose specialties include FDA law and regulations, is that by going after a prominent company such as General Mills, the FDA is sending an indicator of their intentions to everyone in the food and dietary supplement industries. If they can call Cheerios a drug, they are in essence calling whole grains, a natural food provided to us by our Creator, a drug also. When the FDA classifies any substance as a drug, it opens the door to just about any level of regulation they can get away with. In other words, it puts them in the driver's seat at all times.

Don't get me wrong. I am not supporting the consumption of Cheerios. This cereal is not organic, not truly whole grain, and likely made with GMO grains, something the FDA says companies are not required to divulge. The point is that the FDA is again showing that their ultimate plan is to regulate and restrict anything that may compete with pharmaceutical drugs. This could include any food or nutritional supplement -- even to the point of making it illegal to grow your own produce at home for your own consumption.

All it takes is a bit of research to prove that the FDA is corrupted by their conflicting relationships with Big Pharma, corporate farming, and other interests that influence their policies and provide financial incentives to them as well. The FDA poses as a protective agency concerned with the welfare of the public. They are setting a dangerous precedent that gives the message that only drugs can heal. If they can, or should I say if we let them, the ultimate end will be the outlaw of natural foods and supplements. The time to speak out against this travesty is now.

Teach Your Children How to Be Healthy

Many adults realize the error of their ways later in life, and set out to establish healthy patterns of living, seeking to overcome poor lifestyle habits that they have often had for many years. It's great when an individual comes to terms with this and pursues wellness despite their unhealthy past. However, let's think about another scenario. Imagine being raised in a home where health, wellness, and a preventative lifestyle is the norm. What a blessing this would be, providing knowledge and benefits that could spill over into many future generations. Parents, whether we need to make a U-turn ourselves or if we are fortunate enough to not have the burden of overcoming unhealthy patterns, what a privilege and responsibility we have to our children.

In a world that bombards children (and adults) with an onslaught of messages that try to pressure us into eating poorly, overeating, depending on prescription drugs, and other toxic choices, the most powerful way to overcome this propaganda is found in the home by parents who model healthy alternatives. At times, turning the tide of the unhealthy lifestyle that pervades America can seem like an impossible, overwhelming task. The only way it can be accomplished is by taking personal responsibility for our own health (leading by example), and by passing these values on to our children and teaching them how to stay fit and prevent disease.

What Healthy Habits are Most Important for Children to Learn?

A lifestyle of wellness involves many choices, but there are a few basics that will help your kids get and stay on the right track. Suggestions include:

  • Food: Choosing organic, whole foods that are raw or minimally prepared is a foundational habit for present and future health. Start your children from birth (breast feeding), if possible, on a diet heavy on fruits and vegetables and whole-grain foods that will give them maximum nutrition and disease-fighting nutrients. If they are never exposed to junk foods, high-fat foods, excessive amounts of salt and sugar, and a regular supply of meat and other animal fats, they will not develop a taste for these, but will rather find them distasteful.
  • Natural Gardening: Studies indicate that children who spent 12 weeks cultivating their own school garden ended up doubling their intake of fruit and vegetables. Teach your children "how" to provide healthy food for their future family and you will give them a tool that can be used forever. Children love to play in the dirt and watch things grow, especially very young children. They also love things that are their very own, personalizing a part of the garden with a homemade sign such as "Kara's Garden," or "Trey's Plot" will help to keep them interested and focused on caring for their plants. Teach them early on how to plant seeds, pull weeds, water and yes, even enjoy a juicy sample of the harvest. Incorporating knowledge about herbs and their many medicinal uses is priceless information! Don't forget to teach the importance of using non-toxic fertilizers and organic herbicide methods. Promoting gardening to children is potentially not just good nutrition-wise but also gives them a chance to become physically active and may, say scientists from the department of horticultural sciences at Texas A&M University, simply make them feel more positive.

  • Pure Water: Forming a taste for pure, filtered water is also critical. Alongside the media blitz pushing unhealthy foods, the pressure to drink soda pop, energy drinks, coffee, and other unwise beverages is enormous in our culture. Teach your children from a young age that our bodies need an ample supply of water every day to keep us hydrated, allow all of our systems and organs to function well, boost our immune system, and flush out toxins, among other benefits. The only beverage that our body really needs is pure water.
  • Exercise: Again, regular physical activity is significantly one of the key lifestyle choices that contributes to your overall health. Lead by example, training your kids from infancy on up to embrace an active lifestyle. Include a variety of stretching, aerobic exercise, and weight-bearing activities. As they get older, encourage them to find activities that interest them so that they will consistently engage in them, developing a habit of regular physical exercise.
  • Stress Elimination: Yes, children get stressed. Teaching your children methods of stress relief is important and will prove to be a valuable gift as they get older. Walking in the sunshine every day, reading up-lifting books, taking a short nap, listening to good music, Pilates, and taking time to just be quiet are all very effective stress relievers.
  • Avoiding Prescription Drugs: We must teach our children that unless absolutely necessary, prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications should be shunned due to many serious and hazardous side-effects. Even more importantly, it is crucial to communicate that wellness does not lie in a pill or potion that only covers up symptoms, often exposing us to even greater health risks. True health and disease prevention is found naturally from where foods and other substances found in nature, as well as from other quality lifestyle choices. Break the chains of Big Pharma on the next generation by educating your kids to the false advertising of drug-makers and to the benefits of natural healing and prevention.
  • Green Living: It's very important for our children to know about toxic water, toxic air, toxic food and toxic emotions. Teaching them the importance of making a home "non-toxic" is also very important. They should understand importance of quality air purification and water filtration. Helping them understand about effective energy use is also needed -- turning off lights, not standing with the fridge door open, turning off water when brushing teeth, etc. In short, whatever one is doing to make their home clean and non-toxic, their children will benefit from this knowledge also.
By teaching and demonstrating these basics of good health and clean living to your children you will give them a sound understanding of how to stay well and live vibrant, active lives. They don't need to be victims of our fast-food culture, and if we are able to pass on these truths well, it will enable them to do likewise with their own children and beyond. Create a legacy of wellness, and share the wealth as you continue to learn and grow yourself.
