Healthy Benefits of Vitamin B-12

Vitamin B-12 is one of the core nutritional necessities that our bodies need to function properly and keep us well. B-12 is vital for many processes in the body including the health of the nervous system, emotional and cognitive wellness, cardiovascular health, a strong immune system, and others.

Why Supplementation With B-12 Is So Important
B-12, like many substances found in nature, is available in a wide variety of foods. However, when we eat a diet high in cooked, refined and processed foods, much of the B-12 is compromised or destroyed, resulting in a sabotage of B-12 that is usable by our bodies. In addition, B-12 is not most effective when it is found in an isolated form. There is a synergistic effect that takes place only when B-12 is in the presence of other nutrients such as B-6, folic acid, and calcium, to name a few. Therefore, to get enough B-12 only from foods is a challenge that calls for a well-rounded diet high in a variety of organic, whole foods.

Examples include:

  • Organic cheese, milk, yogurt, and other dairy products
  • Sea vegetables (such as kelp) (be careful of toxins)
  • Organic eggs
  • Cold water fish
  • Organic, free-range meats (especially liver)
  • Brewer's yeast

Some studies have resulted in estimates that up to 40% of Americans may not have adequate levels of B-12 in their bodies, especially the elderly. The lack of available B-12 in foods is a major reason why the use of supplemental B-12 is essential. In addition, certain other risk factors make it even more likely that deficiency of B-12 exists, including:

  • Age: The older we get, the harder it is for us to get enough B-12
  • Smoking reduces the body's ability to absorb B-12.
  • Vegetarians can also be at increased risk because meats are one of the greatest sources of dietary B-12.
  • Anyone with digestive issues such as gastric bypass surgery or other stomach surgeries are not able to assimilate enough B-12 (and literally all other nutrients as well).

Benefits of Vitamin B-12

B-12 plays many important roles in nutrition and prevention of disease. Some of these include:

  • Nervous system health: B-12 can treat and prevent mood disorders, improve memory and mental clarity, help with depression and other mental conditions, and bolster the overall health of nerve cells and transmissions. B-12 has been shown to improve metabolism in every cell of the body, especially nerve cells. This is why B-12 is good for treating fatigue and boosting energy levels.
  • Immune System: Lack of B-12 suppresses the immune system. Getting plenty of B-12 is a great way to keep your natural immune system functioning in tip-top shape, thus preventing all types of disease and illness.
  • Cardiovascular: B-12 helps lower blood levels of an amino acid called homocysteine, which is a risk factor for arterio sclerosis, heart attacks, strokes, and other vascular conditions.
  • Circulatory: B-12 is necessary for the body to create enough red blood cells. A condition known as pernicious anemia occurs when the body is unable to do this. B-12 also improves your blood’s ability to carry more oxygen.
  • Genetics: B-12 is also crucial for the synthesis of DNA and RNA in all of the body's cells. It also helps with optimal growth and development in infants and children.
  • Allergies: Try more B-12 for fighting food allergies, asthma, and other allergic reactions. B-12 can also help with conditions such as bursitis and eczema.
  • Absorption of nutrients: B-12 helps us get more nutrients out of the food we eat. Helpful for people with digestive disorders that decrease assimilation of nutrients such as Chron's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and others.

Methylcobalamin: The Better Supplement Choice

Methylcobalamin is one of the two coenzyme forms of vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin). Evidence indicates methylcobalamin has some metabolic and therapeutic applications not shared by the other forms of vitamin B12. Methylcobalamin is the active form of vitamin B12 that acts as a co-factor for methionine synthase in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine, thus lowering blood levels of homocysteine. Methylcobalamin acts as a methyl donor and participates in the synthesis of SAM-e (S-adenosylmethionine), a nutrient that has powerful mood elevating properties. Vitamin B12 can be absorbed sublingually, orally, and in a doctor's office it can be given by injection.

Oral supplements of vitamin B12 as well as injections are able to correct vitamin B12 deficiencies. However, oral doses must contain more than 200 times the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin B12. Dr. Lisette C. P. G. M. de Groot, study author, of Wageningen University in the Netherlands indicated that most people develop vitamin B12 deficiencies as a result of "malabsorption," in which the body becomes unable to extract vitamin B12 from food. According to de Groot, the deficiency typically strikes older people and takes years to develop. In some instances, people who avoid animal products -- such as vegans and followers of a macrobiotic diet -- can also develop a deficiency in vitamin B12 as a result of not eating enough B12-rich foods. A vitamin B12 deficiency is typically treated by monthly shots that are usually painful. To investigate whether an oral dose of vitamin B12 works, as well, various daily doses of oral vitamin B12 supplements were tested in 120 people aged 70 and older. It was found that daily oral doses of 647 to 1032 micrograms of vitamin B12 appeared to correct the deficiency. The current RDA for vitamin B12 is 3 micrograms per day. SOURCE: Archives of Internal Medicine, May 23, 2005.

Mothers with low levels of vitamin B12 in their blood are at increased risk of having a baby with spina bifida -- a birth defect in which the spinal cord fails to form properly. Based on previous research, pregnancy guidelines do recommend that women consume enough folic acid to reduce the risk of spina bifida and related health concerns. The new findings indicate that these guidelines should also include recommendations about vitamin B12.

B-12 works best in a comprehensive formula that includes all of the B-complex vitamins. They have a greater effect together than individually. Avoid B-12 supplements that have artificial ingredients and fillers. These may be cheaper, but think value not just cost alone. Unfortunately, studies have shown that due to poor regulation and ambiguous marketing, consumers may have only a 20% chance of purchasing supplements that actually contain what is listed on the label! A liquid B-12 Methylcobalamin will most likely prove to be the best source as far as absorption and utilization.

Interactions with Drugs and Herbs

Vitamin B-12 can interact with the following: Alcohol; Aminosalicylic acid (para-aminosalicylic acid, PAS, Paser); antibiotics; hormonal contraception; Chloramphenicol (Chloromycetin); Cobalt irradiation; Colchicine; Colestipol (Colestid); Cholestyramine (Questran); H2-receptor antagonists include cimetidine (Tagamet), famotidine (Pepcid), nizatidine (Axid), and ranitidine (Zantac); Metformin (Glucophage); Neomycin; Nicotine; Nitrous oxide; Phenytoin (Dilantin); phenobarbital; primidone (Mysoline); Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs); Zidovudine (AZT, Combivir, Retrovir); Folic acid (large doses); Potassium.

Health Benefits of Black Seed Oil

Black seed oil, also known as Nigella sativa or Black Cumin or Black Caraway Seed, is one of the latest examples of a natural substance that has been used in folk medicine for thousands of years, and is only recently gaining acceptance in alternative and even some mainstream medical circles in the Western world. Once you gain a bit of this potent healing herb and nutritional powerhouse, it is hard not to scratch your head and wonder why it took so long to become "popular." (Of course, the resistance against proven natural remedies is enormous in our culture, but that's a topic for another post.)

The use of black seed oil to treat and prevent dozens of conditions goes back at least 2000 years. Many ancient writers have referenced black seed oil as a legendary herbal remedy that has renowned protective and healing powers. In fact, that Islamic prophet Mohammed reportedly stated: "Black seed oil heals every disease except for death." (The FDA would have had a conniption fit over this!) In Egypt the oil pressed from black seed was named "Pharaoh's Oil." For this society Black Seed Oil was used most often as a digestive aid. The Bible contains the first written record of Black Seed when Isaiah records that ketsah (Hebrew word for what was later shown to be Nigella sativa) must be reaped by a different technique than that used with wheat (Isaiah 28:25-27).

In more modern times, researchers have discovered that black seed oil truly is a very unique substance -- some calling it a superfood -- that contains over one hundred different nutrients and that act synergistically to bolster overall wellness and battle a host of common medical conditions -- it is made up of about 21% protein and contains significant amounts of essential fatty acids; minerals such as iron, zinc, and selenium; and vitamins A, B, and C.

Here are some of the major benefits that scientists studying black seed oil have identified:

  • Perhaps the most diverse and potent effect of black seed oil is its ability to strengthen the immune system. White blood cells thrive on black seed oil, and there is no greater preventer of disease of all types than an immune system that is working effectively. Black seed oil's positive effects on digestion also empower the immune system.
  • Black Seed Oil produces prostaglandin E1. This particular prostaglandin (the scientific community has identified only twelve) works by regulating hormone secretion. It inhibits inflammation, helps to prevent thrombosis, reduces cholesterol synthesis and works to black the formation of abnormal cells. It also lowers bold pressure and may protect the liver from the effects of alcohol and other irritating drugs. This substance also contributes to Black Seed's general balancing action by maintaining the salt and water balance, and it regulates insulin secretion, nerve conduction and gastrointestinal function.(1)
  • Black Seed Oil (BSO) has a very impressive impact on the health and nutrition of cells throughout the body as well. It contains various substances that have been clinically linked to better cell function by maintaining healthy and effective cell membranes. When our bodies are working well on a cellular level, nutrients are better absorbed, wastes more efficiently eliminated, and basically the body is freed up to heal and repair itself the way it was designed to. Black seed oil is particularly beneficial to brain and nervous system cells.
  • Black Seed Oil is also an excellent body cleanser. It helps keep the digestive tract healthy, and it also has anti-parasitic qualities that help rid the body of unwanted organisms that can cause disease and rob us of nutrients.
  • Black Seed Oil is a good source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PFAs), a type of fat that researchers are discovering more and more exciting benefits for. PFAs perform many tasks including regulating metabolism, drawing toxins to the skin for excretion from the body, improving liver and circulatory functions, and regulating insulin and cholesterol levels.
  • Black Seed Oil has a reputation as a very effective remedy for respiratory conditions such as coughs, colds, and asthma and other allergies. This is likely due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic actions.
  • Black Seed Oil also contains a variety of antioxidants that battle free radical damage. Free radicals contribute to many debilitating diseases including cancer, heart disease, arthritis, and neurological disorders.

Black Seed and Cancer Research

What is most exciting to me is research about Black Seed Oil and its effect on cancer. The Cancer Immune-Biology Laboratory of South Carolina recently published results of one of the most all-inclusive studies on Black Seed. "Black Cumin Oil (Black Seed) generally helps encourage the production of bone marrow and the cells of the immune system...It enhances the productions of interferon, protects normal cells from the damaging effects of viral disease, destroys tumor cells, and boosts the number of antibody-producing B-cells. All registered effects make Black Cumin Oil a perfect candidate for use in cancer prevention and cure." Also, this study specifically noted that the growth rate of healthy bone marrow cells increased by a 250% while the growth rate of tumors decreased by 50%. Black Seed is also known as a BRM (biological response modifier). This means that it will reduce negative side effects of the severe treatments for cancer while also boosting the efficacy of those treatments.(1) Among Black Seed's mechanisms of action are analgesic; vermicide; anti-bacterial; anti-inflammatory; anti-microbial; antioxidant; anti-pyretic; anti-spasmodic; anti-tumor; carminative; diaphoretic; diuretic; digestive; emmenagogue (stimulates menstrual flow); galactagogue (stimulates lactation); hypotensive; immunomodulator; and laxative.(1)

Suggested Ways to Use Black Seed Oil

Here are some possible applications for BSO:

  • Apply topically for skin conditions such as athlete's foot, eczema, psoriasis, or ringworm.
  • Rub Black Seed Oil on the chest for respiratory infections.
  • A teaspoon of Black Seed Oil in a cup of herbal tea can also help relieve cough and cold symptoms.
  • A teaspoon in a glass of juice or in yogurt is a great way to boost energy in the morning and will help you sleep well at night too.
  • Black Seed Oil is great for skin and hair health as well. Add a bit to your soap and shampoo. (Internal use is good for hair and skin too).

Healthy Home or Toxic Home? -- Go Green!

With all the emphasis on the quality of our outdoor air, land, and water over the past few decades, it seems that the safety of the environment inside our homes -- where we typically spend a majority of our time -- was somewhat overlooked. Many studies have proven that the quality of the air in our homes is, in general, much worse than average outdoor air. Scientists have labeled this phenomenon "sick building syndrome," and it is largely the result of two major factors. First, most modern homes are overflowing with toxic chemicals from construction materials, cleaning supplies, and the like. Secondly, with the emphasis on energy conservation, homes are now much more air-tight than in the past, and this lack of ventilation only compounds the problems.

Common Toxins That May Be In Or Around Your Home

  • First, you need to be aware that indoor air pollution is a serious problem. Since World War II, over 80,000 new chemicals have been invented and used here in America, many of which are ingredients in multiple consumer products that have found their way into our homes. Are these substances safe? Some have shown themselves to be very dangerous, but the truth is that only about 5% have ever been tested as in regard to their effects on human health.
  • Under the kitchen and bathroom sinks lurk some of the worst chemical offenders, substances such as bleach, ammonia, and other common cleaners. These create indoor air that is toxic to breath, especially to infants and children, and can irritate and burn the skin, eyes, and other organs. In industry, these chemicals are restricted under the Federal Hazardous Substance act, but they are often silently included in products designed for the home. Mixing bleach and ammonia can produce a deadly form of "mustard gas," an accident that has occurred numerous times with tragic results.
  • Construction materials are also a major contributor to poor indoor environments. This is true in both older homes that have been remodeled, and for new construction. Some items to watch out for are carpeting, processed wood products such as plywood or paneling, paints and stains, chemical-laden adhesives, and insulation products (especially foam). Many of these contain known carcinogens such as formaldehyde or benzene. Often these chemicals found in combination can even worsen the problem.
  • Remodeling can also expose residents to dust containing lead from old paint, mold spores and other toxins that are stirred up and dispersed in the process. Be sure to wear an appropriate mask if doing the work yourself, and protect the rest of your home from contamination by sealing off the area.
  • Some types of granite countertops are often overlooked as sources of toxins. They may emit radiation including radon gas, a major source of lung cancers.
  • Furniture, including bedding, can also pose significant risks. We spend about a third of our lives in bed, and unfortunately many mattresses are laden with toxic fire-resistant chemicals called PBDEs that have been banned in Europe due to their links to cancer and immune system dysfunction. This can also be true for bed covers and pillows. Other furniture made of pressed wood can be a source of formaldehyde and other chemicals.
  • House dust is also a villain. One of its major components are tiny creatures called dust mites (and their dung) that can cause respiratory infections and allergic reactions.
  • Water from municipal systems typically contains either fluoride or chlorine, both of which are dangerous toxins, especially in a gaseous state (like from a shower head).
  • Lawn and garden applications are some of the worst sources of pollution. Many commercial products contain ingredients that are known carcinogens and neurotoxins. In fact, some insecticides and pesticides are chemical relatives of lethal substances such as Sarin (used in the 1995 Tokyo Subway attack) and Agent Orange, a defoliant used in the Vietnam War.

Preventative Steps to Take

  • First, rid your home of all dangerous cleaning supplies. Good old soap and water covers most jobs safely, and vinegar is also an excellent natural cleaner. There are several places on the Internet that give recipes for basic non-toxic household cleaning supplies using very inexpensive ingredients.
  • Be very choosy about construction materials used in your home. If you are doing the job yourself or using a contractor, look into "green" products that are available. Choose bedding and furniture that is not toxic. Natural wood furniture is safer and of higher quality.
  • Clean your house with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a Hepa filter.
  • Carpeting / Flooring -- Don't wait until you are environmentally ill before you consider non toxic carpets. When replacing carpets or buying new carpets look for pure wool carpeting. When entering a home with wool carpets that are untreated and natural, one will not get a headache or burning eyes from the toxic combination of chemicals used to make a regular carpet. When looking for hardwood floors consider non-toxic wood such as bamboo. If one cannot remove toxic carpeting, SafeChoice Carpet Care and SafeChoice Carpet Seal are unique sealers designed to prevent the out-gassing of harmful chemicals used in carpet backing. These chemicals include such known carcinogens as formaldehyde, toluene, benzene, xylene and styrene. Carpet Seal is odor-free and, when properly applied, effectively blocks out-gassing for up to five cleanings or one year.
  • Paint with non-VOC paints.
  • Air out your home at least once per week. Open all windows in the early morning for several hours.
  • Purchase a high quality water purification system for the water in your home, both for drinking and bathing. We use the Wellness Filters in our home and also in the OAW office.
  • Use only "green," organic products in your garden and on your lawn.
  • Keep lots of house plants in your home. They help to cleanse the air in your home and increase oxygen levels as well.
  • Use ionic air purification systems in your home and office.
  • EMF Protection -- Electromagnetic radiation is often overlooked when considering toxins that may be in our homes. I highly suggest purchasing a Safe Space I EMF protector which protects 1,500 sq, feet. The Safe Space II covers up to a 9' radius which makes it perfect for home offices or rooms that have computers or TVs.

The Importance of Getting and Keeping Copies of All Your Lab Work

When taking a proactive stance towards your own health and wellness, one of the best habits you can develop is good record-keeping especially when it comes to the lab work done on you and your family. I highly recommend asking your doctor (at each visit) to write on your chart that you are to get a copy of all lab work. Sometimes doctors' offices will give patients a "run-around" about getting copies of lab work. However, it is your right to have a copy of all lab work and a friendly reminder to office people will usually make sure that your request is fulfilled. Remember that persistence pays off. Keep all copies in an organized file for each member of the family, along with any notes about comments from your healthcare provider.

There are many reasons why this is a good idea including:
  • Having the information at your fingertips regarding what tests were taken and when.
  • Being certain of the results -- having the hard numbers in front of you. This is invaluable when analyzing your provider's interpretation of results and their recommendations based on the results.
  • Also necessary when doing your own research -- something highly recommended -- about what the results mean and how you should proceed.
  • Such records also make it easy for you to track your health and any treatments or preventative measures you may have taken by changes in subsequent test results.
  • It's also a great way to monitor the knowledge of your practitioner: do his or her recommendations match up with your own research regarding appropriate steps based on test results?
  • Lab tests can be an excellent tool for understanding and diagnosing illness when symptoms arise, but perhaps even more importantly, they often can catch potential problems before they begin to exhibit symptoms, allowing for earlier intervention and preventative strategies.
  • Certain core lab tests should be performed on a regular basis to monitor your overall health. Such knowledge allows you to take responsibility for your own wellness. Find a healthcare provider that encourages your participation and welcomes your own questions and suggestions about possible options. Knowing your lab results and how to interpret them is very much to your benefit when it comes to making healthcare decisions.
  • Clearly understanding test results can also help you to spot lab mistakes, which unfortunately happens all too often. If a reading is way out of range or inconsistent when other results, you can question it and request to be re-tested. This can save you from unnecessary or potentially dangerous treatments.

Recommended Lab Work

There are literally hundreds of lab tests that can be taken, and many are prescribed based on specific symptoms or health histories. However, there are several that are excellent indicators of your general health and are very useful for preventative medicine as well (the best kind!). Here are a few I suggest getting regularly and monitoring for any changes:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC): This test measures the number of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets that you have, as well as the relative balance between them. It gives a good reading on the condition of your circulatory system which is so vital for distributing oxygen and other nutrients and eliminating wastes.
  • Liver Panel: The liver is one of your most crucial and hard-working organs -- the main filter of the body. The liver panel, also known as the Liver (hepatic) Function Test (LFT), is useful for gauging how the liver is functioning and is an early predictor of liver disease.
  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel: This test measures blood sugar, electrolytes, and the levels of various minerals, proteins, gases, and other substances in the blood. Measures kidney and liver functions.
  • Lipid Panel: Analyzes the amounts and types of blood fats including HDL and LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. Useful for preventing cardiovascular disease.
  • Iron Profile: Tells the total amount of iron in the blood, in the entire body, and if iron is properly bonding with proteins. Used to analyze anemia, and is particularly useful for young children and pregnant women. Make sure that Ferritin levels are also included.
  • Thyroid Panel: The thyroid gland plays many important roles in your overall wellness. See my blog Balancing The Thyroid Naturally for more information on recommended tests.
  • PSA (for men): Prostate-Specific Antigen testing indicator of prostate health. While there are continual raised-eyebrows about the accuracy of this test, it may be an indicator of possible disease.
  • Vitamin-D Levels: Also called 25-hydroxyvitmain D test or 25(OH)D. Click here (Vitamin D) for more info.
  • Fibrinogen: Gives info about how well your body is able to clot and can help prevent risk for coronary disease.
  • Homocysteine: Tests for an important marker of potential heart disease, and measures vitamin B-12 and folate levels. Can be a blood and/or urine test.
  • C-Reactive Protein (CRP): Excellent test for detecting the presence of inflammation in the body, an indicator of many disease processes.
  • Urinalysis: Very basic, and gives a wide array of information about your overall health.
  • Hormone Saliva Testing (men and women): Gives a comprehensive view of the balance of key hormones in the body. Click on this link for more information: Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone, DHEA Cortisol (morning & evening)

Keep in mind that a number of the above tests can be done through via blood spot or saliva testing in the privacy of your own home.

Candida Cleansing -- Needed By Most

Candida: What is it and why do I need to cleanse it? These are both important questions, that I am frequently asked, that have huge implications for our health. In short, candida albicans is a very opportunistic yeast that, when out of control, can spread quickly throughout the body, release numerous toxins, and wreak havoc with literally every organ and system of the body. The typical American diet and lifestyle encourages the growth of Candida, and unfortunately most mainstream doctors are ignorant as to Candida, its widespread effects, and how to treat it.

Candida occurs naturally in the body, and when it is kept at proper levels, it serves a useful purpose. It is estimated that each of us has about a pound of bacteria living in our bodies, and most of these species are very beneficial and necessary. Many bodily functions, such as proper digestion of our food, cannot occur without helpful bacteria being present. The problem is that when the bacterial balance is out of whack in the body, "good bacteria" tend to get overrun by opportunistic species, and candida albicans is one of the worst offenders.

There are two main reasons why candida infections are at epidemic levels today. The first is a diet that is high in sugar and refined, processed foods. Candida thrives on sugar and foods such as simple carbohydrates, and unfortunately these are staples in the Standard American Diet (SAD). When candida gets a steady supply of such "fuel," it grows and multiplies rapidly.

Secondly, the overuse of antibiotics is also a major factor in candida infections. These types of drugs show no discrepancy when it comes to the kinds of bacteria they attack. So, they often kill off helpful bacteria, allowing harmful species such as candida to proliferate.

What Are the Symptoms of Candida?

One of the things that makes candida a complex health issue is that symptoms often vary greatly from person to person and as candida migrates throughout the body, it shows itself in different ways. Therefore, it is very challenging to diagnose and treat.

Some of its favorite places to attack are the intestinal tract, genitals, and oral cavity. However, it can be quickly dispersed throughout the body and lead to widespread systemic infections.

Some of the most common candida symptoms include:
  • Headaches
  • Skin rashes (eczema, acne)
  • Itching
  • Genital infections (vaginitis, jock itch)
  • Athlete's foot
  • Indigestion
  • Acid reflux
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Sore throat
  • Sinus infections
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle weakness

When candida attacks the brain and nervous system, many cognitive symptoms can occur such as:

  • Brain fog
  • Poor concentration
  • Anxiety
  • Mood swings
  • Hyperactivity
  • Irritability
  • Depression

Candida/yeast infections tend to be very hard on the immune system, 80% of which is found in the intestinal tract. Therefore, the health of the entire body suffers.

How is Candida Best Treated and Prevented?

The most powerful way to fight candida is by taking good care of your intestinal tract. This area is typically the "headquarters" of the candida invasion, and eliminating excess candida from the gut is essential. Several ways to do this include:
  • Diet: Eating raw, whole foods that are free of toxins, such as organic fruits and vegetables. Organic fruits and vegetables also have a high oxygen content. Stay away from junky high-sugar and prepared foods and the SAD, in general. Add lots of garlic and onions to your diet.
  • Water: Drink plenty of pure, filtered water -- this will strengthen your intestinal tract and help to flush out wastes too.
  • Probiotic: The use of a quality probiotic is critical. It will help to restore bacterial balance in the gut, thus giving candida less opportunity to multiply.
  • Digestive Tract Flushing: A thorough flushing of the digestive tract will also help greatly. Researchers have found that candida releases about 70 different toxins into the body, usually starting in the digestive tract. The digestive tract must be flushed out so that it can begin to operate efficiently. This will combat candida and allow digestion to improve, restoring nutrients that candida has highjacked.
  • Parasite Cleanse: Candida and parasites go together. They have a symbiotic relationship, feeding off each other and being very destructive to the body. The use of a quality parasite cleansing supplement will weaken Candida and improve overall health greatly.
  • Wild Mediterranean Organic Oregano Oil: This acts as a potent anti-bacterial that will attack candida and help to cleanse and purify your body, while it also boosts your immune system, which will ultimately counteract Candida. Make sure the oil you use contains at least 80% Carvacrol.
  • Colloidal silver: Using an effective colloidal silver is imperative. Many forms of bacteria, virus and fungus utilize a specific enzyme for their metabolism. ACS 200 Advanced Cellular Silver effectively disables the enzyme that is necessary for these organisms to stay alive. ACS 200 is lethal to all species tested of fungi, bacteria, protozoa and virus. In addition, colloidal silver has the ability to distinguish between aerobic ("good") bacteria and anaerobic ("bad") bacteria such as candida, and will not harm the good bowel flora. Because of the indirect way it works (on enzymes needed by bacteria), Candida also cannot develop a resistance against ACS 200 Advanced Cellular Silver.

Tell the FDA to BACK OFF and Get Real -- FDA Attacks Cheerios!

It appears the FDA is rattling their sabre once again when it comes to regulating the health claims of food products. This is nothing new for them, but this latest development is a red flag for all of us -- consumers, organic food growers, and companies that produce and market nutritional supplements. An article posted at gives a very interesting perspective on this issue from the legal standpoint, and it also offers some clues as to what FDA may really be up to behind the scenes.

The FDA sent a letter in May of this year to General Mills, manufacturer of Cheerios breakfast cereal, informing them that they have mislabeled the Cheerios product and are in violation of FDA regulations. Specifically, the FDA is charging General Mills with making erroneous claims on a website that is printed on the cereal box. The contested claims include statements that eating Cheerios can lower cholesterol, with clinical studies to prove it.

The FDA is upset for a couple of main reasons. First, they are accusing General Mills of leading consumers to believe that Cheerios is -- are you ready for this -- a drug, specifically an "unapproved" drug. What this says between the lines is that even a natural substance, such as whole-grains, is considered a drug by FDA standards and subject to regulation if any health benefits are linked to it.

The FDA has also stated that two claims in particular are at issue:

  • "Heart-healthy diets rich in whole-grain foods can reduce the risk of heart disease."
  • "Including whole grains as part of a healthy diet may reduce the risk of certain types of cancers. Regular consumption of whole-grains as part of a low-fat diet reduces the risk for some cancers, especially cancers of the stomach and colon."

The FDA is claiming that the above statements are too confusing for the American public to comprehend, that people cannot properly understand the context of the terms "healthy diet" or "low-fat diet."

From a legal standpoint, the attorneys who wrote this article are saying that these statements appeared to be in line with FDA regulatory standards, thus making the ruling ambiguous and open to a challenge.

From a practical perspective, these statements are simply facts about the known health benefits of eating whole grains, without any reference or claim to Cheerios or any other product. Not to mention that the FDA vastly underestimates the capability of people to understand and apply these facts to their own lives by their own free will. The really ludicrous thing is that if the FDA was truly concerned about our health they would be issuing statements such as those above themselves! How many meds have they approved and then had to recall because the drugs killed or maimed people?

The thing that we really need to pay attention to, according to these lawyers whose specialties include FDA law and regulations, is that by going after a prominent company such as General Mills, the FDA is sending an indicator of their intentions to everyone in the food and dietary supplement industries. If they can call Cheerios a drug, they are in essence calling whole grains, a natural food provided to us by our Creator, a drug also. When the FDA classifies any substance as a drug, it opens the door to just about any level of regulation they can get away with. In other words, it puts them in the driver's seat at all times.

Don't get me wrong. I am not supporting the consumption of Cheerios. This cereal is not organic, not truly whole grain, and likely made with GMO grains, something the FDA says companies are not required to divulge. The point is that the FDA is again showing that their ultimate plan is to regulate and restrict anything that may compete with pharmaceutical drugs. This could include any food or nutritional supplement -- even to the point of making it illegal to grow your own produce at home for your own consumption.

All it takes is a bit of research to prove that the FDA is corrupted by their conflicting relationships with Big Pharma, corporate farming, and other interests that influence their policies and provide financial incentives to them as well. The FDA poses as a protective agency concerned with the welfare of the public. They are setting a dangerous precedent that gives the message that only drugs can heal. If they can, or should I say if we let them, the ultimate end will be the outlaw of natural foods and supplements. The time to speak out against this travesty is now.

Teach Your Children How to Be Healthy

Many adults realize the error of their ways later in life, and set out to establish healthy patterns of living, seeking to overcome poor lifestyle habits that they have often had for many years. It's great when an individual comes to terms with this and pursues wellness despite their unhealthy past. However, let's think about another scenario. Imagine being raised in a home where health, wellness, and a preventative lifestyle is the norm. What a blessing this would be, providing knowledge and benefits that could spill over into many future generations. Parents, whether we need to make a U-turn ourselves or if we are fortunate enough to not have the burden of overcoming unhealthy patterns, what a privilege and responsibility we have to our children.

In a world that bombards children (and adults) with an onslaught of messages that try to pressure us into eating poorly, overeating, depending on prescription drugs, and other toxic choices, the most powerful way to overcome this propaganda is found in the home by parents who model healthy alternatives. At times, turning the tide of the unhealthy lifestyle that pervades America can seem like an impossible, overwhelming task. The only way it can be accomplished is by taking personal responsibility for our own health (leading by example), and by passing these values on to our children and teaching them how to stay fit and prevent disease.

What Healthy Habits are Most Important for Children to Learn?

A lifestyle of wellness involves many choices, but there are a few basics that will help your kids get and stay on the right track. Suggestions include:

  • Food: Choosing organic, whole foods that are raw or minimally prepared is a foundational habit for present and future health. Start your children from birth (breast feeding), if possible, on a diet heavy on fruits and vegetables and whole-grain foods that will give them maximum nutrition and disease-fighting nutrients. If they are never exposed to junk foods, high-fat foods, excessive amounts of salt and sugar, and a regular supply of meat and other animal fats, they will not develop a taste for these, but will rather find them distasteful.
  • Natural Gardening: Studies indicate that children who spent 12 weeks cultivating their own school garden ended up doubling their intake of fruit and vegetables. Teach your children "how" to provide healthy food for their future family and you will give them a tool that can be used forever. Children love to play in the dirt and watch things grow, especially very young children. They also love things that are their very own, personalizing a part of the garden with a homemade sign such as "Kara's Garden," or "Trey's Plot" will help to keep them interested and focused on caring for their plants. Teach them early on how to plant seeds, pull weeds, water and yes, even enjoy a juicy sample of the harvest. Incorporating knowledge about herbs and their many medicinal uses is priceless information! Don't forget to teach the importance of using non-toxic fertilizers and organic herbicide methods. Promoting gardening to children is potentially not just good nutrition-wise but also gives them a chance to become physically active and may, say scientists from the department of horticultural sciences at Texas A&M University, simply make them feel more positive.

  • Pure Water: Forming a taste for pure, filtered water is also critical. Alongside the media blitz pushing unhealthy foods, the pressure to drink soda pop, energy drinks, coffee, and other unwise beverages is enormous in our culture. Teach your children from a young age that our bodies need an ample supply of water every day to keep us hydrated, allow all of our systems and organs to function well, boost our immune system, and flush out toxins, among other benefits. The only beverage that our body really needs is pure water.
  • Exercise: Again, regular physical activity is significantly one of the key lifestyle choices that contributes to your overall health. Lead by example, training your kids from infancy on up to embrace an active lifestyle. Include a variety of stretching, aerobic exercise, and weight-bearing activities. As they get older, encourage them to find activities that interest them so that they will consistently engage in them, developing a habit of regular physical exercise.
  • Stress Elimination: Yes, children get stressed. Teaching your children methods of stress relief is important and will prove to be a valuable gift as they get older. Walking in the sunshine every day, reading up-lifting books, taking a short nap, listening to good music, Pilates, and taking time to just be quiet are all very effective stress relievers.
  • Avoiding Prescription Drugs: We must teach our children that unless absolutely necessary, prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications should be shunned due to many serious and hazardous side-effects. Even more importantly, it is crucial to communicate that wellness does not lie in a pill or potion that only covers up symptoms, often exposing us to even greater health risks. True health and disease prevention is found naturally from where foods and other substances found in nature, as well as from other quality lifestyle choices. Break the chains of Big Pharma on the next generation by educating your kids to the false advertising of drug-makers and to the benefits of natural healing and prevention.
  • Green Living: It's very important for our children to know about toxic water, toxic air, toxic food and toxic emotions. Teaching them the importance of making a home "non-toxic" is also very important. They should understand importance of quality air purification and water filtration. Helping them understand about effective energy use is also needed -- turning off lights, not standing with the fridge door open, turning off water when brushing teeth, etc. In short, whatever one is doing to make their home clean and non-toxic, their children will benefit from this knowledge also.
By teaching and demonstrating these basics of good health and clean living to your children you will give them a sound understanding of how to stay well and live vibrant, active lives. They don't need to be victims of our fast-food culture, and if we are able to pass on these truths well, it will enable them to do likewise with their own children and beyond. Create a legacy of wellness, and share the wealth as you continue to learn and grow yourself.

Synthetic Hormones Again Proven Dangerous

There are already plenty of good reasons to avoid using synthetic hormones, as these have been clearly linked to serious health problems such as breast cancer, heart disease, and other debilitating and potentially deadly health concerns. A new study has now been released which indicates a significant increase in fatalities from certain types of lung cancer in women who were also using synthetic hormones to treat menopause symptoms. (Link to article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090530/ap_on_he_me/us_med_hormones_lung_cancer_4)

The study is the latest conclusion from on ongoing federal research project called The Women's Health Initiative that has been continuing since the late 1990s. Various clinical studies have analyzed the effects of synthetic hormones, and the news is not good. In fact, one phase of the research had to be halted prematurely in 2002 because an alarming percentage of the participants (women given Prempro, an artificial estrogen-progestin compound manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals) were developing breast cancer.

This latest connection between lung cancer deaths and synthetic hormones indicates a frightening 60% increase in lung cancer deaths (for patients with non-small-cell lung cancers, the most common type) in women who were also using artificial hormones.

Specifics of the study reveal that the increase in death rates was found almost exclusively in participants who had been using synthetic hormones for less than five years. This information blows a hole in one of the recommendations that has been issued by the FDA and medical authorities stemming from the Women's Health Initiative Studies. They are telling women that the short-term use of synthetic hormones (in the two-year range) is relatively safe. Obviously, it isn't very safe for lung cancer patients. This is just additional evidence for the increased danger of these hazardous drugs, especially for women who smoke (probably a large percentage of lung cancer patients). Smoking while using synthetic hormones has already proven to raise the risk of strokes, heart attacks, and other types of coronary disease.

The truly ironic thing about this whole issue is that synthetic hormones, a multi-million dollar money-maker for Big Pharma, are typically prescribed for treating the symptoms of menopause as if it were a disease -- which it is not. So, we have women using these highly risky drugs and they are not even sick!

In many cultures around the world, this time of life for women is considered a natural phase that is not to be feared or demonized, but rather, menopause is accepted and even welcomed. Menopause is simply a process that transitions women from their child-bearing years into a later stage of life that can open doors for new challenges and opportunities. Menopause is marked a villain here in the U.S., a "disease" to be avoided and thus medicated. The pharmaceutical companies recognize this and indeed contribute to it. They also capitalize on it by pushing the use of synthetic hormones that literally risk the lives of the women who use them. Risking lives in the name of medicine (first -- do no harm) with the results being that more health concerns are created and deeper pockets are being filled for the doctors who push them and the pharmaceutical companies that make them.

Again, menopause is not an illness, but there are some symptoms that can be difficult to manage for many women. Synthetic hormones are definitely not the answer because, as we continue to see, they add more health concerns. How many times do we have to bang our head against the wall about this before we say "No More"? There ARE answers that work by using natural, safe ways to deal with the symptoms of menopause and PMS. These include:

  • Bio-identical USP progesterone: The use of bio-identical hormone replacement is one of the most effective ways to deal with menopause, helping to achieve hormone balance without the dangers connected to synthetic hormones. Just because a conventional practitioner says there is no bHRT science, does not mean it doesn't work. (By the way, there is plenty of science but it is ignored.) It just means that he/she is most likely not educated in bHRT.
  • Eat Healthy: The importance of an organic diet that is whole-foods based and includes an abundance of raw foods such as fruits and vegetables along with healthy fats cannot be overemphasized. It is foundational to the healing of the body and mind. Eliminate animal fat, which will only worsen menopause symptoms (and your overall health), especially if eating meat and dairy that is laced with added hormones. Refuse to knowingly put chemicals into or on your body. This will increase the hormonal imbalance in your body.
  • Natural Phytoestrogens: Get natural estrogen from the natural phytoestrogens in foods. This will go a long way toward helping with symptoms without being harmful to your body.
  • Cut down on stress: Even better than cutting down would be to eliminate stress completely. Yes, it takes work, but it can be done. Stress is a silent killer. Learn deep breathing techniques, take walks in nature, read up-lifting books, listen to relaxing music, get 30 minutes' worth of unprotected sunshine every day, cultivate friendships and hobbies. Women who have adrenal stress will have a very difficult time in balancing their hormones if they do not deal with/eliminate stress in their life.
  • Thyroid: Get your thyroid correctly checked and in balance. See my blog article Balancing The Thyroid Naturally.
  • Exercise: If one is over-weight, they are most likely estrogen dominant. Excess estrogen is stored in fat cells. Daily exercise helps to eliminate fat and thus helps the body to get rid of excess estrogen. You don't have to run a marathon or sweat buckets every day. Using a rebounder for 15-20 minutes/day or taking a brisk 30 minute walk will do wonders at alleviating fat from the body.
  • Natural vitamin E: The use of natural, mixed vitamin E (that the body can recognize and use) is especially helpful for symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats.
  • Vitex: Chaste berry is a herb that acts as a natural progesterone precursor. Many women use it during the days of the month in which they are not using bio-identical progesterone. Note that it can take 4-5 months for the effects of Vitex to take place.
  • Vaginal Dryness: I have just developed a product called Her Oasis which addresses vaginal dryness and irritation. It contains the highest quality of organic Aloe Vera, natural Vitamin E and Sea Buckthorn Root.

Ladies, it is time to stand up and take responsibility for your health and well-being. Do your own research. The pharmaceutical companies do not have anyone's best interest at heart, nor do they care about getting to the root of health concerns. Many doctors get their continuing education from pharmaceutical reps and therefore know nothing about bio-identical hormone therapy. The pharmaceutical companies are about symptom relief, quick fixes and getting your money in their pockets. Decide to take back control of your health. Give your body, in natural ways, what it needs to be supported and healthy. Give it time to heal and repair. Decide FOR health and well-being and not fads. Ultimately, you will be so thankful that you took the time to educate yourself about what is really healthy and best for your situation. In the long run, you will begin to remember what it feels like to have true health and well-being.
